Rachel is smart. Now, I’m not being a mum here….she is really smart! Not just like your typical book smart either (although she is that too) – this kid has reasoning skills that makes me jealous at times!
Take this morning for example. I was having a bit of a silent tantrum about the whole load shedding issues. Our area had suddenly been allocated another code and zone, and therefore we now had 10 minutes to prepare before we had no electricity.
Now my silent tantrums are legendary. They have been inherited from a parent who shall go unnamed and they are well known in my household. My silent tantrums involve alot of sighing, eye rolling and even the occasional stand-kick ( you know that move where you are so frustrated that you kick invisible dust particles and sway your one leg almost like a weapon?).
After a few seconds I looked up, straight into beautiful brown eyes opened wide and pretty princess lips parted in concern. “Mum, you’re clearly stressed and I think you should sit down.” I protested as a very determined 7 year old let me to the lounge and plopped me into my chair. I started to explain why so was so upset but all I could manage was a weak, ” “Eish Eskom”!
Upon hearing my words she froze mid walk, and turned around sharply. Suddenly I felt warm, firm hands around me squeezing me in reassurance (as I have done millions of times), and then heard a voice that sounded eerily like mine, but that was clearly coming from my 7 year old. “Oh Mum, are you upset about the electricity going out? Mum, at least we get to feel what it’s like to do without it. Don’t you always say there at people that live every everyday without it?”
And as if on cue, the microwave stopped and the lights were out. There it was, my moment of truth, a quick but well needed grounding.
As I dropped her off at school and watched her walk away, I couldn’t help but feel that if the next generation all have that thought process, and that level of humanity, then perhaps we are better off on their hands, than in ours.
The light shines bright in this one….or perhaps Eskom has upped her pocket money!
